BYU JHDL, Open Source FPGA CAD Tools
JHDL is a set of FPGA CAD tools developed at Brigham Young University's Configurable Computing Laboratory that allows the user to design the structure and layout of a circuit, debug the circuit in simulation, netlist and interface for bit-stream synthesis, and so forth.
It is an exploratory attempt to identify the key features and functionality of good FPGA tools.

Cameron - Compiling high-level programs to FPGA configurations
The goal of the Cameron project is to make FPGAs and other adaptive computer systems available to more applications programmers, by raising the abstraction level from hardware circuits to software algorithms.

The XSOC Project - an unsupported collection of experimental hardware and software designs and specifications, cited in the Circuit Cellar magazine series, "Building a RISC System in an FPGA", and providing an example for the noble purpose of teaching computer design.
