Evaluating and improving emulator performance
With functional verification becoming the largest task in the development of an ASIC or large FPGA, many engineers are looking at simulation acceleration or emulation as a way to speed development.
Engineers today can choose from a number of different platforms.
Specifications or performance metrics from the various vendors have been expressed as gate capacities, speed-up ratios over simulation, bandwidth and/or clock frequency of the...

In-Circuit Emulators
Throughout the 70s and 80s legions of engineers became entrepreneurial wannabes by designing - and in some cases actually selling - cheap in-circuit emulators.
Though most failed horribly, some of the well-known vendors of today (like Huntsville Microsystems, Softaid, and Orion) started in this manner.

The ICE Blues
It's interesting that embedded development environments really haven't changed all that much over the years.
During the first half of the 70s I worked with an Intellec 8, a pseudo emulator for the 8008.
A teletype with paper tape reader and punch served as both console and mass storage.

In-Circuit Emulator @ Wikipedia
An in-circuit emulator (ICE) is a hardware device used to debug the software of an embedded system.
It is usually in the form of bond-out processor which has many internal signals brought out for the purpose of debugging. These signals tell about the state of a processor.
Embedded systems present special problems for a programmer, because they usually lack keyboards, screens, disk-drives and other helpful user interfaces and storage devices...
