Microsoft 1394 Design Guide
A driver for a device that connects to the IEEE 1394 bus sits on top of the IEEE 1394 driver stack. The driver communicates to the device by sending IRPs to the IEEE 1394 bus driver, which the operating system provides as 1394bus.sys. The bus driver provides a hardware-independent interface to the IEEE 1394 bus. The bus driver handles some IRPs, and forwards some to the port driver for the motherboard's host controller. Microsoft provides a...

1394 / Firewire @ Wikipedia
FireWire is Apple Inc.'s proprietary name for the IEEE 1394 interface (and also in the UK a colloquial industrial term for 'LHDC' (linear heat detecting cable) used in high integrity fire detection systems). It is also known as i.Link (Sony’s name) or IEEE 1394 (although the 1394 standard also defines a backplane interface). It is a personal computer (and digital audio/digital video) serial bus interface standard, offering high-speed...

IEEE 1394 - The Cable Connection to Complete The Digital Revolution
In the beginning there was analog, and the world was good. But discontent grew among those who heard hiss and rumble in the land of audio, and the digital compact disc became the standard. Between the microphone and the audio amplifier, audio data now remained in a digital form, and the cry was heard, digital is good, analog is out.

Quick Overview of IEEE 1394
The IEEE 1394 high-speed serial bus promises to revolutionize the transport of digital data for computers and for professional and consumer electronics products. By providing an inexpensive non-proprietary high-speed method of interconnecting digital devices, a truly universal I/O connection has been created.

What is FireWire or IEEE 1394?
FireWire is a new high-speed serial bus, developed by Apple and Texas Instruments, that allows for the connection of up to 63 external devices. FireWire is also commonly know as the IEEE 1394 standard. FireWire, which Apple originally developed and trademarked, may appear under different names (such as iLink or Lynx) depending on what platform or company implements the technology.
